It’s important to understand that the alerts!!!, texts, emails, likes, tweets, etc. are hitting your brain like gambling.  The very randomness of these alerts makes your brain feel like it’s won something.  It responds with a shot of dopamine.  The dopamine creates dependency and ultimately addiction.  This is the same technique we use to train animals.  You are basically becoming a trained pet for the companies and marketers that have created these interruptions.

The downside of being a pet is loss of freedom.  We lose choice but also our creative spark that makes us human.  When you are constantly distracted you can never find the zone, or flow, where the real you takes over and creates.  There is nothing more satisfying then being on that edge of creativity and accomplishment.  It’s time to take that back.

Step 2 Be mindful of how you are being manipulated

Over the next several days we will discover just how bad it is.  Every time you are distracted by an electronic device, you will need to mark it down.  Counter to that, it’s important that you mark down the number of times you find the zone over that period of time.  Once we diagnose the issue, we will start working on strategies of change.
